Platter, 16.5 x 13 inches. Brown transfer with polychrome clobbering. Printed and impressed maker's marks for Gildea & Walker. The registry diamonds indicates a pattern registration date of 27 August 1881. The arrangement is oriented vertically, with the larger upper portion divided from the lower by a wide diagonal band. In the top of the pattern, a flock of birds flies over a body of water with sailboats below. A sun with distinctive rays rises (or sets) on the horizon line. An enormous bamboo stalk grows from the right, arching over the scene. A blooming branch grows from the base of the bamboo, with other plants and grasses growing along the diagonal border. The lower portion of the platter is divided into six cartouches with various floral and geometric motifs.
In 1878 James Gildea joined the partnership of Bates & Walker. In 1881 Bates left the partnership and Gildea & Walker continued together. In 1885 James Gildea continued the business alone.
