Platter, 7 x 4.75 inches. Black transfer with polychrome clobbering. Printed maker's mark for Gildea & Walker. The registry diamond dates the pattern registration to 20 February 1883. This pattern features water lily flowers and pads in the water surrounded by a band filled with alternating segments of cross-hatching and pentagons filled with a single dot. There is a similar band filled with alternating segments of the Japanese seigaha (wave) pattern and triangles filled with diagonal lines and stylized flowerheads around the rim. Both bands are connected by spokes filled with a Y-shaped geometric pattern. Between the spokes are panels featuring three different kinds of flowers, including prunus blossoms and orchids.
In 1878 James Gildea joined the partnership of Bates & Walker. In 1881 Bates left the partnership and Gildea & Walker continued together. In 1885 James Gildea continued the business alone.
