Abstract Activism: Sam Maitin's Philadelphia
- April 25, 2024 - August 26, 2024
"Abstract Activism" showcases Sam Maitin’s pursuit of justice and peace through art. This exhibit is curated by graduate students in the History Department directed by Whitney Martinko, Associate Professor of History, and Jennie Castillo, Curator of the University Art Collection and Gallery Director.
How can abstract art make a political statement? Samuel Calman Maitin (1928-2004), a Philadelphia artist, spent his career experimenting with color, design, process, and installation to champion various causes. This exhibit explores how Maitin created art to rally support for peace and justice for his neighbors, Philadelphia’s artists, children, and those affected by war and U.S. policies.
We invite you to explore the abstract activism of Sam Maitin and make connections between the politics of his art in twentieth-century Philadelphia and our world today.
