Visual artist Robert Sindelir opened one of the first commercial art galleries, Sindelir Gallery, in Miami-Dade, Florida in 1963. Known as a pioneer in the 20th century Miami art community, Sindelir greatly advocated for community artists.
Maitin designed this poster for one of his own exhibitions as this gallery in 1965. Around this time, Maitin frequently used faces in his black-and-white works. Though not on display, Maitin used a similar design for a poster he created for a joint exhibition he did with Philadelphia ceramic artist Armand Mednick in 1964. You can see the poster in our digital catalog.
