Maitin created this as part of a series for one of his patrons and friends, Benjamin Bernstein. The two had an affinity for beauty and color, and Bernstein’s patronage gave Maitin the freedom to experiment with his creativity.
The paper collage elements on top of vivid paint mirrors the ceiling tile Maitin created for hospital patients receiving radiation therapy. Similarly to the intention with the ceiling tile, Maitin’s playing with mediums and creation of pop-out designs are meant to inspire joy in Bernstein. Together, they understood the power of art in invoking emotional responses, and with Bernstein’s financial support, Maitin had enough time and resources to create art that would brighten the community around them.
