Last winter I visited an artist frind in Hartland Vermont, and was struck by the open, tree-lined fields, farms, stonewalls and shadowed roads. I made a mental note to return in summer. I wasn't disappointed. Several paintings have or will result from the discovery of this area. For this painting the low afternoon sun created a wonderful mix of deep shadows and sun-scorched grasses in the fields. I was drawn to the pattern of light and dark. This painting was a lot of fun to paint, and I like how just a little of the backlit leaves on the left-hand trees light up that area of the painting.
