By The Waters, A Tribute to Rosa Parks imagines the strength and determination of Rosa Parks through the metaphor of a tree standing up and against a rushing river. The smalti and gold landscape, the bubbles of the water, and the rising sun all stand in contrast to the resilience of the tree cast in clay. In front of this mixed-media mural is a bench whose steel structure forms the silhouette of Rosa Parks intertwined with the words, “Like a tree standing by the waters, we shall not be moved”. By The Waters, A Tribute to Rosa Parks was designed and fabricated with the children of PS189. The artwork is installed at PS189 Bronx, New York and commissioned by Sites for Students and the New York Construction Authority
