- Geometric Abstract Interpretation of St Michael's Grammar School Badge, 2013
- Acrylic on canvas
- 76 x 101.5 cm
The Right Reverend John Bayton AM has very kindly donated to the School one of his recent paintings, a geometric interpretation of the St Michael's Grammar School badge. The badge is surmounted by the wings of the archangel, Michael, and on each side of the badge is a circle, representing the Junior School and Senior School. The complex canvas provokes deep thought and encourages many and varied interpretations by those who view it.
Abstract interpretation of St Michael's Grammar School's badge (2013) by The Right Reverend John Bayton AM. Bishop Bayton was a member of the St Michael's Grammar School Board of Governors from 1985 to 1988 and served as Chairman from 1987 to 1988. He is a highly regarded ecclesiastical artist and master iconographer, and his works are held in many public and private collections in Australia and overseas. The Bayton Gallery in the Community of the Sisters of the Church Learning Centre was named in his honour in 2005.
The School is very pleased indeed to add this painting to its modest art collection, which includes several other significant works by Bishop Bayton: The Sacrifice of Isaac; The Creation (a series of six paintings); and The Stations of the Cross (15 small paintings in the Chapel of St Michael and All Angels). Bishop Bayton consecrated the Chapel in November 2009 and it is therefore fitting that his work should adorn its walls.
Bishop Bayton's generous support of St Michael's Grammar School in many ways over many years is very much appreciated, and I was delighted to accept his gift of his remarkable painting on behalf of the School community. Mr Simon Gipson
