“Women have been fighting for equality since the dawn of time, which is why I use dinosaurs as a metaphor for this ancient struggle ... I enjoy incorporating humor to make serious subjects approachable. The plastic dinosaur toys are silly at first glance, but I transformed them into suffragists to represent the South Dakota Universal Franchise League and the South Dakota Equal Suffrage Association. Suffragist Sue honors the strength and tenacity of women from South Dakota ... I specifically chose to silkscreen on fabric since fiber arts are often associated with women’s work, and women worked hard to make the 19th Amendment reality.”

Klaire Artemisia Lockheart uses traditional oil painting techniques to critique historical injustices in the traditional Western art world. She earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of South Dakota. Klaire enjoys using the human form as a vehicle to communicate the agency of women with viewers. In addition to addressing femininity and feminism within her artwork, Klaire incorporates humor to make serious subjects approachable and creates fiber art to address concepts of women and women’s work.
