Artist, sculptor, and designer Dale Lamphere grew up near Sturgis, SD. He has completed more than 60 large-scale public works and exhibited his work across the country, including the Basilica of the National Shrine in Washington, D.C.; the life-size sculptures in the Capitol Rotunda for the South Dakota Centennial in 1989; the 50-foot Dignity of Earth and Sky near Chamberlain, SD; and Arc of Dreams over the Big Sioux River in Sioux Falls, SD. He was selected as South Dakota’s second Artist Laureate from 2015-2023; participated in the state’s Artists in Schools & Communities Program from 1979- 1981; appointed to serve on the South Dakota Arts Council from 1989-1992; is past president of both South Dakotans for the Arts and Arts South Dakota; and received honorary doctorates from three universities.
