“Part of a series titled ‘Sacred Places’ including images of Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills of South Dakota, this piece was inspired by a painting by Paul Cezanne of Mont Sainte-Victoire. The pine branches seem to dance in front of the imposing rocky cliff, shrouded in mist after a late spring snowfall. Mysterious cave-like openings scar the face of the cliffs. The undulating pattern of trees and traces of snow mark a spiral trail from the bottom of the painting to the top of the canyon face. These works are a study of intimate details. I was especially challenged in depicting the layered landscape.”

Growing up in Parkersburg, WV, Rebecca Mulvaney started art lessons at the age of 10 with artist Dorothy Horne Decker. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Rebecca spent several years doing portraits on commission before turning her concentration to landscape subjects in oil, pastel, and watercolor. She moved to South Dakota in 1993 and took great joy
in painting the subtle colors and textures of the prairie. In addition to studio pursuits, Rebecca worked with other artists in community arts development.
