“Inspiration for my pottery comes from the Apache tradition of honoring the fallen
warhorse by firing horse hair into a clay vessel. Just as crude tarpaper shacks provided shelter to pioneers of the Western plains, these boxes provide shelter for my vessels. Words blur from legibility to line, similar to the weaving paths of time ... a poetic symphony strung together by my mother, Fae Johnston, in letters to her Aunt Ruth. These letters describe life growing up on a
farm in eastern South Dakota and reflect on the trials and tribulations of contemporary ranch life
in the Badlands of western South Dakota. ”
