“From the time of Lewis and Clark to today, the Missouri River valley in South Dakota has been a source of inspiration to visual artists for recording its valley views in all seasons. This distant winter view especially, later in the day, offers a range of snow colors from direct, reflected, and shadowed light near and far across the Missouri River valley from a river bluff near Oacoma, SD. Hillside cedar trees offer scale and definition in the painting.”

Steven Randall was a combat artist in Vietnam in 1968. His current passion, however, is landscape painting — typically outdoors on location. He paints what he sees, where he is at the time, in the impressionist style. His subjects may be highly recognizable landmarks in South Dakota or less conspicuous, but no less special, places. In that light, he believes his paintings have relevance and significance, reinforcing a sense of place for the people of South Dakota.
