“Artist organizations and galleries in the Black Hills of South Dakota have annually invited plein air artists to paint together in public on location. At the end of the event, artists show their work and generally enjoy interacting with the attending public, answering questions, and promoting South Dakota art. I painted ‘Ranch Cabin’ at one of these events, not just as a visually attractive relationship of visual elements, but also as a historic view of ranching as referenced in the National Register of Historic Places in Lawrence County, South Dakota.”

Steven Randall was a combat artist in Vietnam in 1968. His current passion, however, is landscape painting — typically outdoors on location. He paints what he sees, where he is at the time, in the impressionist style. His subjects may be highly recognizable landmarks in South Dakota or less conspicuous, but no less special, places. In that light, he believes his paintings have relevance and significance, reinforcing a sense of place for the people of South Dakota.
