“Competition is a stimulating and positive aspect of my life. It is a way for me to endeavor to the best I am capable of being as an artist ... the pride my Oglala ancestors would feel counting coup ... a modern day ‘road warrior’ in my own way. The dancer was created after the 9/11 attack in New York City. The necklace was meant to represent the vulnerability of the human to outsider forces. The figure is meant to represent the balance between life and death.”

Randall Blaze earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with honors from the University of Montana, Missoula, in 1977. Randall focused on jewelry making for the first decade of his career. He then switched to working primarily in ceramic, incorporating his jewelry techniques into his ceramic designs, in addition to painting, works in glass, and other mediums. Randall lives on 100 acres in an incredibly remote and austere section in the Pine Ridge Reservation on top of Cuny Table at the edge of the Badlands in South Dakota. He has created a fully equipped art center, with studios for ceramics, metalsmithing, painting, and two-dimensional design. He welcomes K-12 students for workshops as well as adults for individual art instruction.
