“This was taken in August in Badlands National Park during a new moon. The long exposure allows us to see the Milky Way much better than with the naked eye. The shutter was open for 20 to 30 seconds, allowing the camera sensor to gather more light than the eye can see, which makes the stars appear brighter. The formations are illuminated by the starlight. The photograph is a frame from a time-lapse shot with a DSLR Canon 5D Mark III with a Zeiss 25mm lens.”

Randy Halverson has been shooting time-lapse photography since 2010. In addition to single photographs, Randy also produces time-lapse videos created from thousands of his still shots. He also mounts the camera on a motion-controlled rig that moves the camera slightly, creating additional motion in his videos. His work has been featured internationally, and he collaborated with composer Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica and The Walking Dead) who produced an original score for Randy’s video titled “Temporal Distortion”.
