“The 19 in the title is a reference to S.D. Highway 19, a well-known landmark on the eastern side of the state. North is often times used as a synonym for up. Viewers of this series are often placed in a precarious position high above the horizon line giving them an unusual view of the landscape. While most landmarks would indicate a point on the map or a particular location, 19 is a line which extends north and south through the state. In this series I began to introduce multiple views and stacked landscapes as seen from different points and
different times, as on a drive through the state or possibly viewed over the course of a lifetime.”

Growing up on a farm in southeastern South Dakota has given Paul Peterson an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but also the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. Paul’s paintings are emotionally autobiographical and mirror his feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at Black Hills State University.
