“ ‘Ghosts of Deadwood’ is no. 2 in a series of four watercolors of Deadwood painted during the summer of 2011. I was attracted to this view for several reasons including the background hillside burned during the Grizzly Gulch fire. I was also interested in the foreground mechanical equipment showing a contrast between it and the somewhat older surrounding architecture. My primary focus was on the layers of ghost images — years-old, hand-painted wall ads for products sold long ago. I, too, have painted such advertisements on walls.”
