The Marr residence is located a block away from the church where I paint every Monday, so I pass this little gem on the way to my favourite Nutana coffee shop each week. Built in 1884, it is the oldest house in Saskatoon still standing on its original site.
The Marr Residence was built by Alexander (Sandy) Marr in 1884, it is the oldest house in Saskatoon still standing on its original site. Our city has designated The Marr as a heritage site because of its age, the contributions Mr. Marr played in the development of Saskatoon, as well as the role the house played in the Northwest Resistance.
The Northwest Resistance occurred when Métis settlers under the leadership of Louis Riel came into conflict with the Canadian government and military over issues of land surveying and cultural autonomy. Due to its proximity to both the fields of battle and the navigable South Saskatchewan River, Saskatoon was chosen by General Middleton as the site for a field hospital to accommodate and treat the wounded. The military field hospital itself was established in three Saskatoon houses, one of which was the Marr house.
