The Vacuum Forms in the South Carolina Arts Commission Collection are part of a series of works that were created in the early 1980’s. However, the source or ‘roots’ of this work appears in many earlier works of the 1970’s.

At this time I began to work on sculpture that was based upon the concept that the potential for art is everywhere and is not confined to specific styles, subjects, or sophistication. In retrospect this seemed to be a natural interest rather than a rational conscious plan. This could be the result of living in rural South Carolina and also being a teacher of art. Within this work, the form of the string bean was explored and became a subject that fulfilled this interest. My interest in the string bean was and is not based upon the subject itself but rather upon the energy of the form and its use in a variety of situations.

The mission of the South Carolina Arts Commission is to promote access to the arts and support the cultivation of creativity in South Carolina. We envision a South Carolina where the arts are valued and all people benefit from a variety of creative experiences.

A state agency created by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1967, the SCAC works to increase public participation in the arts through grants, direct programs, staff assistance and partnerships in artist development, arts industry, arts learning, creative placemaking, and folklife and traditional arts. Headquartered in Columbia, S.C., the SCAC is funded by the state of South Carolina, by the federal government through the National Endowment for the Arts, and other sources.
