This painting sets the vividly colored mugshot of a young Native woman sent to Ft Leavenworth prison in 1899 for assault with intent to murder with the legacy of attempted erasure of the indigenous peoples of the Americas and fetishization of the Native American in Western cowboy fantasies. She wears rich green textured grasses on her shoulders almost as if they were part of military dress and the choice of crimson for the ribbon on her hat speaks to blood shed and to still to be shed.
