This piece speaks to themes of poverty and imagined abundance. The original photograph was taken in 1938 by Russell Lee for the US Farm Security Administration (FSA) in Southeast Missouri during the Great Depression. Here I've transformed the context of poverty into something luxurious but ultimately superficial - deep blue prints of English bouquets line the background with rhinestones falling from the sky. It speaks to the misconceptions some have about what people living in poverty actually desire - the racist myth of the Mercedes welfare queen that permeated society's discourse on poverty and the government's role in ensuring basic care for Americans. Yet this woman is dignified and thoughtful. Rhinestones and roses don't feed and clothe a family. She knows that.
