The original photograph that the piece is based on was taken during the depression, one of many commissioned by the US government to document poverty in rural areas. I've named the child after Saint Bernadette, the patron saint of the poor. The thread she holds is gold, contrasting with the faded pink of her dress. A dove brings her a twig with gold berries. Beneath the surface there are discussions to be had about the fetishization of poverty, the role of the church, and child labor.
