Recently named to commemorate the presence of one of Lanark’s breweries which lay at the end of this close. The brewery in North Vennel, owned by Murray & Kilgour, brewers was started in about 1830. Later the Gilroy family took over the property.
At its height they employed about 30 men and the brewery was known for its London Porter, India Pale Ale, and soft drinks. They not only brewed but bottled beers both their own and for others under license. These included Bass and Guinness. The brewery closed in 1911 when the stock and plant of the brewery was sold by auction. Part of the sale included 60,000 pint bottles.
