During the 17th and 18th centuries shoemaking was Lanark’s biggest and richest craft. This close led to the factory of Bernard Bell principal shoemaker in the Burgh.
Bernard was succeeded by his son Robert, a merchant and wholesaler, and was Provost of Lanark from 1767 till 1779. The Wynd was declared a common passage through to the South Vennel in 1777.
