"Bent Out of Shape" extends Antar's Expressions in Stone series, her ongoing abstract translation of emotional states into stone form. The piece was made during the pandemic, originally titled "Covid Twisted Figure" before Antar settled on its current name. "Everyone was bent out of shape during that time," she has said, by the loss, the uncertainty, and the strain of a world holding its breath. The title operates literally: a coiled base gives rise to a single sinuous curve that lifts and hooks back on itself, the posture of a body wrenched from its natural shape. Viewers often read the form as a cobra, raised and watchful, though that resemblance was not Antar's intention. Carved in onyx, the work registers the collective and personal pressure that produced it.
