Statement
Artist Statement
As an artist-observer of American life and human nature, my sculptural work comprises two parallel and intertwining bodies of work that present a dialogue between the tangible and the intangible, the specific and the universal.
My realism series serves as a visual record of American contemporary culture, featuring popular figures and symbols that resonate with the collective identity of the nation. This work reflects the external aspects of American life, celebrating its icons and narratives that shape our cultural landscape. Immortalizing these figures in stone creates a connection to shared memories and experiences, inviting viewers to reflect on their significance in the context of American history and identity.
The abstract works delve into the internal landscape of human emotions and personal trauma. These sculptures embody feelings of angst, conflict, and resilience, providing a counterpoint to the concrete representations of the realism pieces. While the realism sculptures may evoke nostalgia or admiration for cultural icons, the abstract works invite introspection and emotional engagement, encouraging viewers to confront their own struggles and experiences.
Together, these two bodies of work create a comprehensive exploration of the human experience. This interplay allows for a richer understanding of American life, as the external representations of cultural icons can lead to deeper reflections on the internal conflicts and emotions that shape our society. My work bridges the gap between the visible and the invisible, illustrating how our cultural icons are intertwined with the personal and collective traumas that define our existence. This holistic approach not only enriches my own artistic expression, it also fosters a deeper connection with my audience, inviting them to engage with both the familiar and the abstract aspects of their own lives and, consequently, that of our nation.
