Blog # 21 Wonder
Wonder is a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, usually unexpected, or unfamiliar. I completed a painting called Under the Sea in 1999. I had taken many trips to Mexico dating back to the1980’s before the hotels span the beaches and people became the focus not the beauty of the raw landscape. The feeling was so amazing, open space no tourist.
Each year the landscape changed with more commercialism and clogged streets. I spent time on some local islands with no people or hotels. The food pure fresh caught fish grilled on open pit, nothing like barracuda grilled. After lunch snorkeling looking at the coral reefs. With the sunlight reflecting off the coral and watching the local saltwater fish swimming around you. I wanted to capture the raw beauty and yet keep this painting quite simple. I have not gone back to Mexico in many years I want to remember as it was not what a human playland it has become.
An artist lives through eyes of their brain. I can look at a blank canvas and begin to recall a place a feeling and how I want to interpret that with color and shapes. This is freedom of expression. I need to communicate this to myself first. If I chose to share this slice of my life with others that is my choice. This painting recalls those wonderful days will always remain in me. I can relive by looking at this painting. Over not out....
