Wrapped around the Crystal Spring E-Branch is a vinyl mural designed by students of the 2022-23 Crystal Spring Elementary Art Club under the direction of art teacher Chris Jones. The original watercolor work depicts many iconic landmarks in Roanoke such as the Star and Wells Fargo building across three separate works. Sheila Umberger, the director of libraries for the city, stated, “I think what’s really great is they’re showing the way they feel about their community and what’s important to them. Like the star and all of that, so a result of that is a beautiful piece of artwork that we can all enjoy.” The original pieces currently hang in the Crystal Spring Elementary Library. The project was supported through Roanoke Public Libraries, Roanoke City Public Schools, Neighbors in South Roanoke, Inc., the City of Roanoke’s Percent for Art Fund, and the Roanoke Arts Commission.
