Teenage residents at Roanoke Juvenile Detention Center, known as Coyner Springs, participated in a Youth Artist Workshop. They were asked to consider how they feel on the inside versus how they believe they are perceived from the outside, or how they feel about the environment outside of them. After brainstorming ideas around this concept, they each drew a circle on a sheet of paper. Inside the circle, they used symbolism to visually express their responses about how they feel inside. They used the space outside of the circle to depict how they think they are perceived by others, or how they feel about the world outside of themselves. Their individual artworks were combined to create these final mixed media abstractions, rich with symbolism and raw self-expression.
