In 2014 when I turned 60 on January 1st, I had the bright idea that I would do a journal quilt once a week. I made it through 10 weeks and then dropped the project. Now that I am in the last year of my 60’s, I am determined to complete the project or at least add to it. I named the series “In the Moment in My Sixties”. Each quilt represents what was on my mind the day I made it.
On the day I made “In the Moment in My Sixties #14, I am capturing the memory of having returned to work to serve as the Interim General Counsel of the Southern Poverty Law Center. I entered a whole new world of social justice. The experience was eye-opening, and I learned a lot.
The message of the quilt is clear. Race is at the root of the work of SPLC so I used black and white fabric to capture the essence of the organization. I appliqued the words “SPLC” , “win” and “Fight” on the front of the quilt. I machine quilted it in a diagonal pattern on my Janome sewing machine.
The back of the quilt has a high heels and purse motif to capture the idea of returning to work. There is a hanging sleeve on the back for easy display and a label that documents the quilt.
I signed it on the front and added a charm that says “Sexy and Sixty.” Visit my “In the Moment in My Sixties” gallery on my web site to see all of my journal quilts.
