Native Grasses of Colorado
- Steel & Acrylic
- Chris Rench
Native Grasses is a series of four naturally aged steel and acrylic pieces that represent Colorado native grasses. Each of the four pads include three stocks of a single native grass. A design committee worked with the artist to select and refine the pieces. The grasses are Alpine Bluegrass (orange acrylic), Bluebunch Wheatgrass (green acrylic), Buffalograss (yellow acrylic) and Woolly Bloom (red acrylic). They range in height from 12 to 24 feet tall.
The metal used to create the sculptures in Hood River, Oregon barely made it to the sculptor through the fires of 2017. The main highway into the valley was being shut down because of the massive fires and the artist needed the delivery to remain on schedule for a winter installation in Northglenn. He received the metal finished on time, and then made it through the rock Mountains during the winter without incident.
