The Pietà in art history originated in the Middle Ages as a depiction of Mary contemplating the crucified body of her son which she holds in her lap. Pietà means pity or compassion. It was a very popular subject for European artists in the Early Renaissance, particularly in sculpture. Michelangelo's Pietà sculpture is the most famous, but there have been many other artists and mediums depicting this subject.
Miriam's Pietà is unique not only for its large size (4' x 8'), but also because it is done in pastel in blue, white, flesh, and black. The limited colors create a very somber and intimate mood for Miriam's Pietà. The background is Miriam's hometown of Birmingham, Alabama viewed from atop Red Mountain.
