My Navajo guide Ray talked to me about this "Totem Pole" on the left and the "Yai-Bi-Chai" (yay-ba-chay) or Rain God Dancers or the Holy Dancers as they are known by his people. From very young the Navajo are taught to run among the canyons through the sand and brush. When they hike they yell so that the holy people will recognize their voice.
Not only did Ray tell me of his culture, but intrigued me with his travels working jobs off reservation and surprised me with his understanding of photography.
As he spoke about the many symbols in the valley that his people had settled I found myself taking on a spirit of seeing my own symbols as I did in the smaller grouping in the middle. I read about the Yai-Bi-Chai rituals and found myself seeing the men sitting around a fire in the morning eating after the fasting and dancing of the night.
