Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Green, blue, pink, purple, and orange color scheme. Border of eyes painted orange. Purple eyebrows and nose tip. Upside down, triangular shaped blue line curving at the ends on the forehead. Pink, swirly designs on each side of the forehead and the cheeks. Blue zigzag and swirly lines on the cheeks and the chin. Outer border of teeth outlined in pink, inner border outlined in red. Short, orange, brush stroke marks above and below the mouth. Four gems on the forehead, two green gems, one silver, and one purple. Three gems below the mouth, two pink gems, and one yellow gem on the chin.
