Mariposa Dorada
Wood and acrylic paint
Circle mandala. Outer border thinly painted mauve preceded by a thinner red border. Red, swirly designs at the center of the mandala. Four pink triangles with red borders around the swirly designs. Blue rectangular shapes surrounding the border of the inner circle. Inner circle background painted gold.
The Recycling the Sacred collection is composed of mandalas whose materials were primarily sourced from second hand stores. The artist began collecting variations of wood from second hand stores to later repurpose and give them "a new dignity and life." Many of the patterns used are inspired by ancient native cultures, particularly the basket and pottery designs of the Huhugam. Most of the mandalas take a circle shape, celebrating the Sacred Circle symbol and our place in it.
