Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Painted with blue, purple, green, orange, and pink color scheme. Border of eyes outlined in pink. Nose carved out in upside down heart shape, outlined in purple. Zig-zag lines swirled at the end painted in purple and green on the forehead and chin. Orange eyebrows, Pink diamond in between eyebrows, Blue, narrow, isosceles triangle with three yellow dots inside painted above each eyebrow. Green southwest patterned-like line on each cheek. Outer border of teeth outlined in pink, inner border outlined in purple. Small blue stroke marks above and below the mouth.
