Aztec/Spanish. Plaster bandage, paper clay, painted with acrylics. Part of the Sun Serpent Series.
Full mask of male figure, right side representing an Aztec, left side representing a Spaniard. Aztec side is painted a dark tan color with red and orange undertones. Right side has an ear with a gold painted earplug with silver metal piece in the center. Raised and sculpted black painted eyebrow with carved hairlines. Lightly black painted shadow under eyebrow, painted thin black mustache, and thin goatee along chin. Black painted line down center of mask. Spaniard left side is painted white. Eyebrow, mustache, and beard are all raised and sculpted with carved hairlines, painted reddish brown.
The Sun Serpent was a play produced by Childsplay and CALA Alliance, performed at Tempe Center for the Arts in 2011.
Artist and sculptor Zarco Guerrero made about 30 masks for the performance. All of the masks were made directly on the actors to better fit them during the performance.
