Catrina Copping a Tan. Full body articulated skeleton sculpture. Carved wood, painted with acrylic paint, and decorated with mixed media found items- fake flowers, purple wig, sunglasses, purple string bikini.
This piece is calaca skeleton sculpture sitting in a fold out lounge chair, wearing a purple bathing suit bikini and sun glasses with purple sparkly hair and pink flower crown, and wearing red shoes.
Artist Zarco Guerrero shared the history behind this installation piece:
"It's a metaphor for our obsession for being out in the sun and getting a suntan and take it to the extreme. And as a result of that, people go out in the sun to "live", but what happens is we end up killing ourselves. We let the sun burn us and give us cancer. It's about the irony, a parody on us as pleasure seekers committing 'sol suicide'.
And of course it's very much in line with Mexican humor. Especially when dealing with día de los muerto imagery. There's always an element of humor.
It was created as a sort of alternative altar installation. Over the years I've made a few installation altars that aren't necessarily inline with traditional día de los muertos imagery or decorations such as candles, photos, or papel picado. It's an installation that deals with another aspect of death or dying."
