Duende #4. Carved wood, pounded copper pieces for eyes, buffalo horn, and horse hair, painted with acrylic paints. Part of the artists' original CuCui Series (spanish for the Bogeyman). Artist describes these "demons" to be good demons, pretending to be bad to scare the "heck" out of you if your are misbehaving. Inspired by the Japanese style demon masks.
Full mask of male figure with a single modified/carved buffalo horn in center of forehead and light brown/blonde hair. Expression of mask is angry. Eyebrows painted brown and carved to point upward on the sides of the forehead and slightly covering the top of the eyes. Carved lines and furrowed brow wrinkles in the center of forehead. Eyes are pounded copper circles with holes punched through center, outlined with red paint and white paint on the sides. Separated mustache extends to sides of mouth and then goes downwards, painted brown. Mouth carved wide open to expose top and bottom teeth, and tongue. Lips painted red, tongue painted light pink, teeth painted white. Full set of teeth exposed with flat smooth edges, except the incisors and bottom canines are very long and pointy. Lower lip has patch of hair carved in a wide fishtail shape, with side pointing in each direction, also painted brown. Overall mask painted a dark reddish/orange color.
