Cortez. Plaster bandage, paper clay, painted with acrylics. Part of the Sun Serpent Series.
Male older man figure half mask. Overall face painted light tan with red undertones. Sculpted wrinkles on the forehead and between brows, painted in with red lines. Black dirt or smudge marks on both sides of forehead. Eyebrows and mustache that connects to sideburns are raised sculpted and carved with hairlines, painted reddish brown and white. Deep wrinkle lines on both sides of the nostrils, painted brown to add depth. Sculpted bags under eyes, and nose slightly crooked. One brown ages spot on the left lower cheek.
The Sun Serpent was a play produced by Childsplay, performed at Tempe Center for the Arts in 2011.
Artist and sculptor Zarco Guerrero made about 30 masks for the performance. All of the masks were made directly on the actors to better fit them during the performance.
