This painting is part of a series of of paintings based on Robert Schumann's 'Carnaval' Op.9, created for the event "Muziekschilderijen" (Musicpaintings) / "Paintings of .... ", a combination of a recital and exhibition in Heerenveen, The Netherlands, in 2011. In collaboration with pianist Sabine Simon, organised by Vriendenconcerten (artistic director Pamela Smits) The exhibition of paintings reflected the music program of the recital. For Schumann's Carnaval I was inspired by figures of the Italian Commedia dell' Arte. Here we see Pierrot, who has taken off his mask. In a way the painting is a tribute to the 'Pierrot' by 18th century French Rococo painter J.A.Watteau.
