Surprise 1 and 2 are a diptych, and the framing is almost as important as the paintings themselves. Again, I am working with relief text worked into the frames themselves. In these paintings I am taking the idea of Chaos, the Greek anthropomorphizing of the unorganized stuff the world was before it became the form we are used too, and I have made what envisioned as a male construct and made Chaos into a woman. A woman who is going to surprise everyone by creating the world and universe. These paintings are not about my protagonist being surprised but rather her surprising us. Just doing a few little things. Physically these painting, like my Nike in a Party Dress, have backgrounds of mica powder that I “painted” on through many layers of gold leaf size and mica powder that I sprinkled on to the canvas.
