The narrow, winding road along the Rio Grande through Big Bend Ranch State Park from Lajitas to Presidio ranks among the most spectacular drives in North America, and I never tire of driving it, nor, of painting it. In this view of the river, the shadows on the mountains become supporting characters, along with the tall grass and mossy river banks. You can barely make out the small section of relatively insignificant two-lane paved road as it winds along the river as an afterthought to the landscape.
