On a blustery fall afternoon outside Santa Fe, the sun washed the entire high desert landscape in red light. Deep purple shadows from the weathered old fence posts, the earthy green of the cottonwoods and the blue southwestern sky stood in dramatic contrast. Fast moving clouds sent wind whipping and wailing through the dried grasses of northeastern New Mexico. The old rail fence, almost glowing in that last warm light, seemed to have come to terms with the wind long ago, standing firm but letting the wind slip through without trying to direct it, and the wind being careful not to carry off the deep purple shadows cast by the fenceposts. Follow those posts toward the trees on the horizon, float up into the puffy clouds, then sink back down and shimmy down the post into the waving grass. This small painting carries you big places.
