Cracked earth walls an arroyo beneath Terlingua landmark Bee Mountain. Early morning light paints the desert and the pitted mountain in the soft colors of sherbet. It's a favorite hiking area of ours in the winter, when the color changes as the sun wakes the desert, revealing small surprises -- a tiny flower, a bone, a cluster of cactus tucked into sheltered cracks in the hard packed earth of Big Bend country.
