Mitre Peak outside Alpine, Texas in a showy Texas sunset
Mitre Peak rises above the ranchland between Alpine and Fort Davis, and it doesn't require much of a backdrop to look majestic. A colorful Far West Texas sunset puts this view over the top.
In this pastel landscape painting, I worked to capture the transient light of the desert at sunset. It lasts but a minute or two, so I must work from my photo references, but I couldn't have painted this foreground without having been there to experience the last light of day in person. I call this treatment of light a "Blink and It's Gone" landscape painting.
