This original mixed media colored pencil and ink drawing shares a playful moment I observed at a small summer fair. A toddler, courageously balancing in his older brother's oversized shoes, ventures toward a sleeping sheep. Every step the child takes is a precarious one, but finally, he is within petting distance of the snuffling beast, who raises one eyelid in encouragement. Their gentle interaction captures that fleeting blend of childhood curiosity and innocence, when all the world is new and yours for the taking, if only you dare take the next step.
This story-drawing evokes reflections on friendship, bravery and discovery. And yes, the little boy did finally stumble and tumble down onto the sheep, who simple baa-ed a welcome and made room on the hay for the little guy.
My drawing adds a touch of warmth to any space and invites you to remember simple joys -- and giant steps as you tried to fill big shoes.
