Wildfires can bring color mixed with frightful beauty to the southwest sky, but after weeks, smoke more often wins. In Big Bend country in September, 2020, we experienced only a few days of smog and bad air quality from the massive fires devastating the West Coast. It was such a relief to see the sun bursting out from the gloom, I painted its triumphant escape.
