Summer in the Texas mountains often comes after months of dry weather. Grass tall from the previous year is golden and thick, hiding any hint of new growth. With the monsoon, however, the complexion of ranch country changes overnight. Spring green shoots appear almost instantly, pushing their way through clumps of parched grass and reaching for the sun. It's a lovely time of year to paint mountain pastures, like these of Big Aguja, with their subtle green twining through reds and golds. And it's an even lovelier time for ranchers, who anticipate pastures "greener than Ireland" within a few days. All around the region, you can see folks smiling as they say, "We're greening up!"
